"There is a final push of material and exams as the semester comes to a close. Our Mathematical Economics course has now transitioned into the final section of the semester after our recent exam this past week. We have now been discussing constrained optimization of economic models. This type of optimization is very applicable in real life scenarios."

"Economic classes at CSM are not only meant to give you the theoretical concepts but also their applicability into real life scenarios. We are currently amidst an investment game simulation in our Engineering Economics course where over the span of 8 weeks we track the gains and losses of our investments in the stock market. Having learned such knowledge will be extremely beneficial in future years"

"Putting a dollar value on the environment in economic terms is a very tedious and difficult process that economists are facing today. This is just one of the topics we have been discussing in our Environmental Economics course this semester. Another deals with evaluating the benefits and costs of environmental impacts such as pollution and how economists go about calculating such benefits and costs and where errors and discrepancies may occur. As an Economics student at CSM, not only are we presented with the overarching theoretical problems but also the specific mathematical processes behind them"

"Every year CSM puts on Wellness Day in order to promote the 5 dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual. Here health related companies from around Golden come to promote and share their expertise at the mines campus. Today I learned about acupuncture and got a free massage!"

"Seeing new faces on campus is always exciting. This past Monday, February 20th, CSM hosted its "Discover Mines" event where newly accepted students were invited to spend the day visiting current students and professors in their respective departments. As an Economics student working as an ambassador on this day, I was able to inform many about the B.S Economics/Business program and its unique niche in the mines community. I'm very much looking forward to the second "Discover Mines" event tomorrow!"

"Being a student at CSM is much more than just academics. It's also about getting involved through clubs, events and seminars to create networks and contacts. Today, I attended the first Wind Energy Club meeting here on campus. This club's aim for the semester will be to construct a wind turbine using practical, low technology materials. As an Economics & Business student (with a minor in Science, Technology, Engineering & Policy), who has never really built anything, this will be a great opportunity for me to extend my knowledge of applications for green energy."

"The campus this week is buzzing with commotion as we await the exciting, yet stressful Career Day next week, February 14th. This year happens to be the largest Career Day in the Colorado School of Mines history with over 200 companies! Even though this event falls on Valentine's day, I'm very much looking forward to spending my time getting to know various employers and the job opportunities out on the market today for Economics/Business majors."

"First exams of the semester are starting to present themselves. As with every semester, time management is key, especially when distractions such as the excitement surrounding the Super Bowl are apparent.
As an Economics and Business student, I'm quite aware of the opportunity costs associated with these time conflicts, and therefore strive to maintain a well balanced schedule. Having an unexpected snow day as we did this last Friday provided a very nice 24 hour gap of spare time that was spent cross country skiing and playing in the snow!"

"By the end of the third week, the Colorado School of Mines is in full swing. I'm finding my relationship with my books becoming stronger and stronger. It is incredibly rewarding to be able to connect economic concepts from various classes together despite the varying content material. Aside from class, every CSM student knows that having a little fun is essential to success at mines. As such, I attended the Mines Activities Council (MAC) comedian show, which is held every other Friday on campus. Here I was able to laugh with my peers after a long academic week.
Every year CSM puts on a wonderful leadership conference titled the Leadership Summit. This year's Summit, held this past weekend (January 28th), had the theme of "communication to new heights". It began with the keynote speaker, Erik Weihenmayer, sharing his astounding mountaineering accomplishments despite being completely blind. This talk left me speechless. I realized that success in school is not solely based upon academic rigor, but upon pure passion and will. My success as an Economics/Business student at mines has developed from my passion and willingness to invest the time into my studies as well as my professor’s passion and willingness to help me along the way."
I have always loved math and science. I, however, was more interested in Economics in relation to the environment and therefore knew that the Economics degree at CSM would provide me with the best of both worlds. This Bachelors of Science degree has enabled me to pursue economics while still incorporating math and science.
