The Engineering and Technology Management Program’s Executive-in-Residence Series allows executives from industry to pass on insight and knowledge to graduate students preparing for challenges that the seasoned executive understands well. This ETM Program initiative facilitates active involvement by industry executives, through teaching, student advising activities and more.

Mark Sawyer2020 Executive in Residence: Mark Sawyer

Mark Sawyer is a software industry executive who has been both a venture-funded, startup CEO and a large, public company officer. Today Mark is director of industry strategy at Trimble whom he joined as a result of its acquisition of Vico Software, a company he co-founded and led as CEO and President. Before Vico he was CEO and President of @Last Software, the makers of SketchUp, where he led that company’s merger with Google. Prior to @Last Mark was Vice President and General Manager of the AEC Division at Autodesk. Beyond his duties at Trimble, Mark is a board director in software companies and an industry advisor to private equity investors. He received his BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University.

Penny Herscher, Silicon Valley Tech Executive

Penny HerscherPenny is an experienced Silicon Valley technology executive, entrepreneur and public company board director. With over 15 years as a high-tech CEO and over 10 years serving on public company boards, Penny’s strengths include building global advanced technology products, teams and revenue. She took her first company, Simplex, public in 2001, sold it in 2002 and then led her second company, FirstRain, until 2015 when she retired from being a CEO. She now serves on 4 public company boards, one private company board and volunteers as a coach to CEOs, executives, new board directors and entrepreneurs to help them achieve business and career growth. She has a BA Hons, MA in Mathematics from Cambridge University.

Scott Cattran, President and CEO, Woolpert

Scott CattranScott Cattran is the President and CEO of Woolpert. In this position, Scott is responsible for setting the vision and strategy of the company, developing and strengthening a strong trust-built culture, achieving company long-term strategic goals, meeting the annual business plan and making Woolpert a Great Place to Work for all employees.
Scott also serves as the Chair for the Woolpert Board of Directors. In this position, Scott sets the agenda for Board meetings, helps ensure the Board is effectively providing strategic direction for the firm and ensures that Woolpert shareholders realize equity value appreciation for their investment in the company.

    Michelle FryeMichelle Frye is Director of Strategy for Trimble Buildings. Michelle joined Trimble in 2004, as a product manager in the Mapping & GIS division (now Geospatial). After holding several roles between sales and marketing within the franchise, Michelle joined the Trimble Buildings franchise in a strategy capacity in 2014. Michelle received her Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science & Climatology from the University of Delaware and her Master of Science Degree in Geography (GIS and Remote Sensing) from the University of South Carolina.

    Dominic GallelloDominic Gallello, presently the CEO, SymphonyAzimaAI, is an established technology leader with a deep background in vertical software solutions. Throughout his career, Mr. Gallello has established a track record of building great products, driving an intense customer focus and building global brands. His products have won more than 50 awards including 2 R&D 100’s, considered the “Oscars of Innovation”. He was named a SaaS Top 50 CEO in 2018. He has led three successful turnarounds of public & private software companies over the past 16 years, resulting in ~$1.3B in exit value, with a 300%+ average increase in value. Earlier in his career, Mr. Gallello held Executive Vice President positions leading product development at Autodesk and Macromedia. Mr. Gallello has lived in and run companies in China, Japan and Hungary and speaks a number of languages. His articles have appeared in such publications as Wired and the Wall Street Journal. A hands-on philanthropist, Mr. Gallello has funded and overseen the development of orphanages that have provided a nurturing home and solid education to 500+ children over the past 15 years. An avid long-distance swimmer, Mr. Gallello has completed many challenging races including the Asia to Europe, Arctic Circle Crossing, Sicily to Calabria and the Golden Gate to Bay Bridge races in recent years. Mr. Gallello holds both BA and MBA degrees from Monmouth University.
