Below are the most frequently asked questions of incoming and current students of either the in-person or online ETM program. Click on any question in the list below to view the answer.
Prospective student Questions
What background is required for admission into the program?
Students in the ETM program should be able to apply their analytical and scientific experience in science and technology with coursework in management, strategy and operations research. Therefore a BS degree in engineering is preferred, and a STEM degree is required.
What are the average GRE or GMAT scores for accepted students?
The GRE/GMAT is not required for the application process.
For what job opportunities will the ETM degree prepare me?
Graduates with a MS degree in Engineering and Technology Management are prepared for numerous categories of positions in a cross-section of industries. Among those are engineering management support, investment analyst, operations research analyst, risk management, various consultant positions, project management, financial analyst, technology entrepreneurs, etc.
What are the tuition/fees for this program?
While graduate tuition and university fees for graduate students are determined at the university level (see here for more information), this program also assesses a one-time program fee to students entering the program. The program fee covers all costs associated with the co-curriculum requirements and all course materials (i.e. simulations, course packs, software, etc.) except course textbooks. The fee is charged at the start of the program. For 4+1 students, it will be applied when you indicated that you would like to start the master’s program (at the start of the combined semester).
I am a current Mines student, and I am interested in the ETM master's degree. What options are available to me?
Mines undergraduate students can either seek out a 4+1 combined student option or simply apply to start once their undergraduate (UG) degree is complete.
If a Mines student is seeking to do a 4+1, they can double-count up to six credits towards both degrees. The easiest way to do this would be to select two 500-level ETM courses and try to count them down towards their Mines UG degree before their graduation. Each student must obtain pre-approval from their UG Advisor on which 500-level ETM courses can count towards their UG degree. Some students may not have enough UG elective space for this option. In general, while students can apply once they have accrued 60 credit hours, they must apply for and be admitted to the master’s program the semester before they graduate with their UG degree and indicate a start date for the beginning of their last semester as an UG student so that they can have one semester of overlap with both degrees to be considered a combined student. The ETM program fee would be applied at the start of the master’s program. Students should make sure they are aware of all criteria before applying.
Can I be enrolled in the ETM program as a Mines undergraduate and graduate student?
You may apply and be accepted into the ETM Master’s program as a Mines undergraduate student as early as your junior year. See Combined Programs information.
May I count any of the undergraduate courses towards my ETM graduate degree?
Students in an approved combined degree program who take ETM classes from the list shown in the catalog as undergraduate electives are able to double count up to six of these credits towards the MS degree in ETM. See Combined Programs information.
Can I receive the ETM degree before completing my undergraduate studies?
No. As stated above, you may begin taking ETM master’s courses, but they must not count towards your undergraduate degree. In fact, the Office of Graduate Studies requires students to complete their undergraduate degree one semester prior to earning a graduate degree.
What is the approximate length of the program?
The ETM program consists of 30 hours of course credit. The faculty recommends enrolling in 15 hours (five courses) each semester for the in-person program. Most students complete the in-person program in just two semesters. Some students enroll in the ETM program with the support of their employer while working, and may choose to take only one to two courses per semester. We also offer the program fully online and students can take up to 15 credits (5 courses) per semester. However, the online program is very rigorous. Most online students take one class during every 8-week session.
Can I take ETM classes in the evening if I am working full-time?
The in-person ETM program is not designed as an evening part-time program. Almost all of the courses are scheduled during the day, typically Monday through Thursday. Students who take the ETM program while working will need to arrange to be in class during the day or pursue the fully online version of this program. This generally requires flexibility from your employer.
What is the average age of students in the program?
The average student age for the in-person ETM program is 26. The average age of the student body for the online ETM program varies drastically.
What is the biggest difference between taking the ETM program online vs. in-person?
We have a variety of programs within our department. Our residential (in-person) courses are reserved for our students within the in-person ETM program, and our online courses are reserved for our students within the online ETM program. There are a variety of offerings for each program. Students within the online program are expected to take courses within the online course offerings, while students within the in-person program are expected to take courses within the in-person course offerings. Students should refer to their appropriate advising sheet for further information. This can be found on our website.
Please note: Our online courses are structured very rigorously. All our online courses are 8 weeks long. Students enrolled in one of our online courses are expected to do 16-weeks of work within an 8-week timeframe. Students should think of it as being 2 classes worth of work within those 8 weeks (generally, 14-17 hours’ worth of work a week). Please keep this in mind when deciding on how many classes you want to register for.
Current Student Questions
When should I take the ETM Capstone course?
The Capstone project may only be taken in your final semester of the ETM program.
I entered the program with a deficiency, but I still want to graduate on time. How do I register for more than 12 hours in a semester?
Nine graduate credit hours are considered to be a full course load. Fifteen credit hours is the absolute maximum number of credit hours that may be taken during the fall and spring semesters; this rule is enforced by the ETM Committee.
Answers to Curriculum Questions
What are the course requirements?
To earn a non-thesis MS in Engineering and Technology Management weather in-person or online, students must complete five core courses (15 semester hours), and five courses (15 credit hours) of ETM electives. See the ETM Advising Sheet for more information.
What is the recommended course sequence?
It is recommended that students enroll in all core courses offered each semester. If you plan to enroll part-time, please see your advisor for recommendations. The Capstone course (EBGN 585) is to be taken only in your final semester.
Are there any “areas of specialization” in the program?
